Byzantine Frame
This is my interpretation of Byzantine design. The running panel and corners are
direct copies of mosaic tile patterns found in Byzantine architecture. The
diamond shapes on the panel are achieved by cutting int the gesso layer after it
has been surfaced bringing to mind tiles laid to form a mosaic. The mirror
itself was made using the technique of Verre églomisé the French term meaning
glass gilded. It is a process where the backside of the glass is gilded with
gold leaf. The result is a mirror-like, reflective finish in which designs are
then engraved. This technique dates to pre-Roman eras. We have modernized the
frame by using 14K White gold and not the yellow gold found in artefacts from
this era.
